What is Endometriosis
Endometriosis is a gynecological condition. The exact cause is not yet established. Endometriosis occurs when bits of the tissue that lines the uterus (endometrium) grow on other pelvic organs such as the ovaries or fallopian tubes. Outside the uterus endometriosis tissue thickens and bleeds just as the endometrium does during menstrual cycle.
There is no known cure for this condition. However it can be successfully managed if the correct treatment options are followed.
Depending on the severity of the condition it is categorized as,
- Stage 1
- Stage 2
- Stage 3
- Stage 4
Stage 4 is the most aggressive form of the condition. Endometriosis affects one in ten women worldwide. Once a woman reaches menopause, this condition goes under control.
Symptoms
- Mild to severe lower abdominal pain
- Irritable bowel
- Back pain
- Bloating
- Weight gain
- Heavy bleeding
- Fatigue/chronic fatigue
- Brain fog
Sometimes endometriosis can persists without pain. This is called silent endometriosis.
Diagnosis methods
The most accurate way of diagnosing Endo is a 4 step process:
- Discuss your symptoms with a gynecologist
- Do an ultra sound scab under his guidance
- Laparoscopic surgery
- Lab testing to confirm it is ENDO
Treatment Options
Western Medicine
- Surgery –laparoscopic or laparotomy
- Period suppression or manipulation with birth control (oral birth control or injections or coil / loop.
Ayurveda
- Acupuncture and homeopathy
- Naturopathy
Whichever treatment option you may choose, always ensure to monitor your condition regularly via scans. Also importantly note that you can follow a mix of the treatment options to have a successful and holistic plan to successfully manage your endometriosis.
